Music for Sunday 4/29/18

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee.
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

While the title line and chorus of Great Is Thy Faithfulness come from this beautiful passage in Lamentations 3:22-23:

The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

the second line of the hymn comes from James 5:17:

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

(The hymn uses the phrase from the KJV: the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.)

No shadow of turning.  No variation.  No shifting shadow.  That’s our faithful God.  We aren’t serving some god created by man, always trying to appease some unknown and unknowable being.  We serve the very One who created us: In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures (James 1:18).  Our God is eternal, never changing, always faithful.
—-

In battle, in blessing,
Your love never fails us.
Unending, unchanging.
What could come against Your love for us?

The band is playing a Matt Redman song called Good Forever, and…the title says it all.  That’s the nature of our God: He is good, and He is good forever.  Not just eternal, but eternally good.

From the beginning to everlasting,
Your kindness knows no end.
And should the earth shake, should every star fade,
Still You will never fail.

James says every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above.  As you join in singing Great Is Thy Faithfulness this Sunday, don’t miss all the good things and perfect gifts this hymn contains!
